Overview & What is PCNL?

Kidney stones get formed in the urinary tract when chemical compounds crystallize in urine. PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is a specialized technique used to safely extract kidney stones from the upper ureter or kidney when they are too large for standard ureteroscopy or shock wave lithotripsy.

The percutaneous nephrolithotomy procedure is ideal for patients with larger kidney stones. Through a small skin incision of around 1 cm, PCNL allows the surgeon to extract stones of 15mm or larger. For smaller target areas, a refined approach called MINI PCNL may be recommended.

How PCNL Procedure is Performed

The surgery requires general anesthesia. To begin, the surgeon performs a cystoscopy using a thin, lighted telescope to inspect the ureter and bladder. A fine catheter is placed on the stone side to navigate up to the kidney.

Depending on patient positioning (prone or supine), a small incision (8-10 mm tract size) is made over the back near the kidney area under real-time X-ray guidance. An endoscope is passed into the tract to visualize and fragment the stones. A JJ stent is typically placed to aid healing.

Occasional vomiting or nausea can occur shortly after surgery.
Mild pain or urinary frequency in the first 24–48 hours is manageable with medication.
